Our Story

Black Toast Music

Circa 1990, Bob Mair saw an opportunity to solve a multifaceted problem—publishers and labels were often disconnected strangers, majors monopolized the market, deals were convoluted, varied, and restrictive, and indie music was underrepresented in most media—what if these things could change? BTM was and remains Mair's answer to that question, founded to make high-quality indie music readily accessible and easy to license for music supervisors, editors, and content creators while giving independent artists and songwriters an equitable platform for representation—where everyone gets the same deal, no one's entire body of work is locked down, and other musical endeavors aren't limited or restricted. A summary of Mair's work as a musician and businessperson shows three defining characteristics of the individual and the business he built—he loves music, he loves to work, and he loves to work with people who love music. These core elements drive and bolster the BTM ethos—the continual and collaborative pursuit of making and sharing music.

Values

Our Values

Excellence
We strive for excellence in what we do. The tiny details. The massive undertakings. The quick interactions. The long-term relationships. Our Clients deserve our best. Our Music Creators deserve our best. Our work deserves our best.
Accountability
We take ownership of our actions and their outcomes. When we make a mistake or underdeliver, we will work to correct and amend. We know that without a commitment to accountability, our dedication to excellence is unsustainable.
Adaptability
Like the world itself, the music industry is dynamic and ever-evolving; we must be also. We commit to continuously learn and expand our knowledge of our artforms and our business, the technologies that shift them, the laws that affect them, and the real people who make them and make them possible. We will flex and grow in pursuit of opportunities for them to flourish.
Humanity First
We celebrate the rich and diverse tapestry of voices that make up the global music landscape. We aver without caveat or qualifier the inherent equality of all people, their right to freedom of expression in music, all artforms, and life, and that the creation of art is their exclusive purview. We will represent the human voices in our part of this tapestry with respect and appreciation for their magnificent variance in culture, custom, experience, and identity.
